Steve Holland's "Z ROD" Radial Extension Hi-Hat Kit

Steve invented the "Z ROD" after using a remote hi-hat on his left for better positioning of his 3 rack toms, but found the top section had excessive wobble when struck, as it had to be clamped to a cymbal stand and the 5 foot of cable was redundant.

The "Z ROD" provides multi positioning of the hi-hats in a 3 inch radius or sweep of the center pull rod operated by the foot, hence bringing the the hi-hats closer to the drummer without having to move the foot pedal closer, giving a more comfortable foot position operation and easier access (in his case) to the 10" tom tom, 16" crash and 8" splash cymbals (please see photos).

The "Z ROD" idea uses the bottom section of his existing hi-hat stand that supports the weight of the hi-hats (eliminating the excess wobble) and uses 2 multi clamps and a tom tom arm. The top 4 inch section that holds the seat for the hi-hats was cut from the bottom of his existing hi-hat tube and the seat was prized off (which is easily replaced back onto the long tube if needed to be converted back to the standard straight hi-hat stand).

The "Z ROD" is then screwed into the bottom pull rod and the top rod screwed into the top thread of the "Z ROD". Lock nuts are provided to ensure that the "Z ROD" does not work loose.

The seat for the hi-hats is then placed over the top of the top pull rod and clamped together with the tom tom arm to the base tube of the hi-hat stand using the 2 multi clamps. (please see video explanation below).

Steve's "Z ROD" has lot less wobble than the remote hi-hat stand, has no cable, is a lot less expensive than a remote hi-hat stand and is universal to 6mm and 7mm hi-hat rods by using the adaptors.

Steve has been using his "Z ROD" on his kit since January 2021 and he has found that it improves the positioning of his hi-hats, hi-hat foot pedal, left double bass drum pedal, 10" tom tom, 16" crash and 8" splash cymbals, hence giving all round better seating position making the execution of complex patterns and fills easier to perform.
